How To Determine Load To Be Applied On Concrete Slab
How to calculate self weight of slab, How to calculate slab load on column,in this topic we know about how to calculate self weight of slab and slab load on column.
In structural building designing by architect and civil engineer it is considered that how much load is applied on column by slab beam and brickwall and distribute in footing and in soil by Foundation footing .
There is various types of load acting on rcc column. Calculating the load applied on rcc column in structural designing and construction size of footing, size of column and size of beam and minimum thickness of slab will be decided according to strength and capacity

Self weight of slab is total calculation of Dead load of slab floor finishing load and live load
Various type of load applied by slab over column
1) self weight of slab
2) floor finishing load
3) live load
1) self weight of slab :- self weight of rcc slab is also known as dead load of slab it is immovable structure in building construction, so it is called as static loads and permanent load, so immovable structure made of RCC slab is self weight of slab.
2) floor finish load :- floor of RCC slab is decorated with plastering and tile fixing so quantity of plastering material and quantity of tile fixing is floor finish load on RCC slab, which is considered about 1 kilo Newton per square metre over RCC slab
3) Live load :- live load means load applied by different types of furniture and presence of human beings over RCC slab. Which is considered about 2 kilo Newton per square metre over RCC slab
Slab load on column = (D.L + F.L+L.V)
Where D.L = dead load of slab
F.L = floor finish load
L. V = live load
How to calculate self weight of slab
Calculation :- thickness of slab = 5″
That is equal to 125 mm=0.125 m
Area of slab = 1m2
For calculating self load for slab we have require self weight of concrete that is 2500 kg/m3 for RCC slab and self weight of Steel that is approx 8000 kg/m3
Self weight of slab is equal to weight of concrete in slab and weight of Steel which is used in construction of slab. First we calculate weight of concrete in slab.
A) weight of concrete used in slab
Area of slab = 1 sq.m
Thickness of slab = 0.125 m
Volume of concrete = thickness×area
Volume of concrete= 0.125m ×1m2
Volume of concrete= 0.125 m3
Weight of concrete = volume×density
Weight of conc =0.125 m3×2500kg/m3
Weight of conc = 312.5 kg/m2
We should convert in kilo Newton we get load applied by concrete in slab is about 3.125 kN
B) now calculate weight of Steel used in slab by Thumb Rule we know that approx 1% of concrete steel is used in slab
Density of steel = 8000kg/m3
Volume of steel is 1% of concrete
Weight of steel = 0.01×0.125m3×8000kg/m3
Weight of steel = 10 kg/m2
Now convert kilo per metre into kilo Newton so load applied by Steel in slab is approx 0.10kN
Now total self weight of slab is equal to weight of concrete and weight of Steel
Total weight = 312.5 kg+10kg
Total weight = 322.5 kg/m 2
Now total self load of slab is about 3.225 kN acting on column
How to calculate slab load on column
Slab load on column = (D.L + F.L+L.V)
Where D.L = dead load of slab = 3.225 kN/m2
F.L = floor finish load = 1 KN/m2
L. V = live load = 2 KN/m2
Hence slab load = 3.225+1+2 kN/m2
Hence slab load = 6.226 kN/m2
Slab load on column is about 6.226 kilo Newton per metre square
